Tectonic 5.5 allows the creation of new configurations and 3-D ceilings using an innovative and standardized fastening system.

System

An original patented mounting system

Central to Tectonique 5.5’s innovation, the mounting system dreamed up by the 5.5 designers allows you to install tiles that are angled or staggered to create volumes and rhythms, that could, until now only be achieved by costly custom solutions. Tectonique 5.5 is composed of new hangers, hooks and profiles specifically developed and designed for installing all the system’s models.

1. Fastening profile

Punched at 100 mm intervals for fitting the threaded rods and the hangers at the precise location defined by the model, it simplifies the installation of the system. The fastening profile is fixed to the load-bearing structure of the building using adjustable runner brackets.
Ref. PA – 3030

2. Hanger

It is fixed to the end of the threaded rod with nuts and lock nuts. Designed to receive the "main runner", it is fitted with a clip securing the assembly.
Ref. SUC – 75

3. Spacer

Designed to ensure the spacing between the hangers and to stiffen the whole of the system, the spacer is clipped onto the threaded rods, above the hanger.
Ref. ENC – 3000

4. Main runner

Designed to carry the tiles, it rests on the hanger and snaps into place with a worm taper on one of its two ends.
Ref. TC – 3000

5. Main runner stop

The main runner stop fits into the end of the main runners to mark out a free island and to limit any sliding of the tile hooks. It is drilled in two places to allow a bracing cable to be passed through it.
Ref. BUC – 45

6. Tile Hook

Linked to its plate by an ¼ turn assembly, the tile hook is specially designed for easy and fast mounting and removal of the ceiling. The 3 different hook heights are used in combination according to the models.
Ref. CDC – 75 ( 75 mm)
Ref. CDC – 175 ( 175 mm)
Ref. CDC – 275 (275 mm)

7. Plate

Screwed directly onto the back surface of the tile, it is designed to receive independently the 3 hook heights. Its shape and position determine the hollow side joint of 6 mm between the tiles.
Ref. PTC – 38X46

8. Wooden tile

The wooden tile is the visible part of the suspended ceiling. Mounted on the metal structure, it is particularly light and flat. 12 tile formats make up the 4 collections giving a total of 24 ceiling models.

Composition of the Tectonique 5.5 tile

With a new covering and new composition, the Tectonique 5.5 tile meets ambitious size and functional objectives. It benefits from the latest innovations of Oberflex’s research and development department in terms of aesthetics and industrial processes.

New generation wood veneer laminate

The Tectonique 5.5 tile is covered on its visible face with a real wood, new generation veneer laminate. Phenol-free, the veneer laminate face contributes to controlling the environmental impact of Tectonique 5.5. With an “A+” rating for VOC emissions, the tiles conform to air quality standards.

A brand new composition from Oberflex

The Tectonique 5.5 tile is composed of a particle board wood frame and a honeycomb cardboard body. Thanks to this new composition, it is light and easy to handle, while meeting the challenges of flatness, thickness and stability.

Because its weight has been reduced, the thickness of the tile can be increased to improve the visibility of the sections and enhance the aesthetics of the designs.

Installation

Composed of a patented mounting system and lightened tiles, Tectonique 5.5 is easy to grasp. Installation requires no special tools and all the markers are adjusted and adapted for mounting and removal which is both simple and accurate. An installation guide and a predefined drawing for each model provides fast understanding of the system.

A unique mounting system

The tile hooks are supported by the main runners. All aligned in the same plane, they are set out at intervals defined according to the model concerned. The angles and staggering between the tiles are obtained by 3 different hooks of variable heights ( 75 mm, 175 mm and 275 mm).

The precise locations of the hooks on the back of the tiles are pre-defined and contribute to the play of overlays and angles.

Easier installation

The first step is to define the position of the ceiling according to an axis or one side of the room. Once the fastening profiles are attached at regular intervals (max. 1200 mm) on the primary ceiling, simply assemble the hangers, clip the spacers and insert the main runners.

Once the structure is in place, the wooden tiles can be placed into position on the main runners.

Acoustic qualities

A new approach regarding acoustics of your spaces

Control of a building’s sound quality is obtained by the balance between absorption, diffusion and reflection of the sound. Tectonique 5.5 ceilings, due to their shapes and relief forms, directly influence these three acoustic characteristics. The choice of a model will therefore be made according to its relief and openings, taking into consideration the layout of the space and the acoustic effect being sought.

Absorption

Sound absorption is the ability of a wall to partially absorb a sound wave and only to return a part of the energy received to the point of departure. This property thus helps reducing reverberation in a space and increases the acoustic comfort and the intelligibility of speech. The sound absorption of Tectonique 5.5 ceilings, is created by the position of the tiles and the spaces between them and by the characteristics of the material.

Reflection

Reflection is a physical phenomenon by which a surface returns a portion of the sound waves. It is the type of surface and the nature of the material which affect the reflection of a sound wave. The surface of Tectonique 5.5 tiles contributes to controlling sound reverberation. A part of the wave is reflected whereas the other part enters the material.

Diffusion

When a sound wave encounters a flat obstacle, the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence, same as a mirror. If the surface has relief forms and shapes, the obstacle becomes a point of dissemination and the sound wave is sent back in all directions. The relief forms and the changes of planes of Tectonique 5.5 ceilings create this dissemination and limit the areas of focus of the sound and echoes. This more diffuse and homogeneous acoustic enriches the sound balance of the space.

The evaluation of these three acoustic characteristics is provided in the data sheets for each model. These give guidance in aimed at comparing the potential of acoustic correction of one model in relation to another.

An eco-designed system

Tectonique 5.5 is an eco-designed system, imagined and developed to reduce its environmental impact from its design and throughout its life cycle. Its composition anticipates the end-of-life recycling of the materials.

Design and manufacture

Localness of suppliers

In order to limit the environmental impact due to the supply of Tectonique 5.5 components, suppliers are chosen according to their geographical locations.

A “new generation” surface covering

It is manufactured according to a simplified industrial process which limits the number of components and is phenol-free. Some tints used are water-and ethanol-based and derived from beet crops thereby contributing to a reduction in VOC emissions.

Optimisation of formats

Taking into account environmental factors in defining the formats has allowed us to optimise raw materials and production waste, packaging, storage spaces and the volumes transported.

Reduced weight

The Tectonique 5.5 composition reduces tile density by 40 %. Made lighter, their transport is less energy-consuming.

Installation and use

Ready-to-install system

Tectonique 5.5 is a simple system. Its installation can therefore easily be entrusted to a company based near the destination site. Tectonique 5.5 is installed without cut-offs and generates neither a noise nuisance nor waste.

Energy saving

Most of the 24 Tectonique 5.5 models are composed of lightcoloured woods. The objective is to enhance light reflection on the ceiling and thus contribute to reducing the over-consumption of electricity.

Air quality

The composition of the wooden tiles has been specially studied to minimise the emission of VOCs. The only resin used for the surface covering is phenol-free. Tectonique 5.5 has obtained “A+” classification for air quality requirements.

Product end of life

A limited number of materials

ectonique 5.5 is a solution that anticipates managing the end-of-life with easy disassembly and separation of materials (wood or metal) so they can be recycled. The steel mounting system is quickly detached from the wooden tiles to allow full recycling of the materials:

  • to the metal sector for the metal pieces
  • by energy recovery or the manufacture of new particle boards for the wooden tiles.

Taking into account the end-oflife impacts of Tectonique 5.5 meets the requirements of the European directives for waste management of building projects set for 2020.
